Grand roman moderne du XVIIIe siècle anglais, considéré comme l’un des sommets de la littérature universelle, à l’égal des oeuvres de Rabelais ou de Cervantès, mais longtemps mal connu en France, Tristram Shandy, littéralement Tristram Tête-Fêlée, a été redécouvert en 2004 grâce à cette nouvelle traduction intégrale de Guy Jouvet. Une traduction saluée, à juste titre, comme un tour de force, alors que n’étaient disponibles que des traductions anciennes « toilettées ». D’une force comique et subversive incomparable, cette chronique d’une maisonnée campagnarde, où l’on assiste aux déboires et aux débats véhéments et passionnés des membres de la famille Shandy, de leurs amis, voisins et domestiques, dans des domaines aussi variés que l’obstétrique, la religion, l’amour ou l’art de la guerre, apparaît d’abord comme le roman de la liberté absolue de l’écrivain : « Il faudrait savoir à la fin si c’est à nous autres écrivains de suivre les règles — ou aux règles de nous suivre ! » disait Laurence Sterne. Cette édition de La Vie et les opinions de Tristram Shandy, qui renoue avec l’esprit de l’auteur, respecte notamment au plus près son usage révolutionnaire de la typographie et de la ponctuation, contribuant à redonner au texte toute son extraordinaire vélocité.
