Résumé

Avant de fuir le ghetto et la déportation, la mère d'Hugo l'a confié à une femme, Mariana, qui travaille dans une maison close. Elle le cache dans un réduit glacial d'où il ne doit sortir sous aucun prétexte. Toute son existence est suspendue aux bruits qui l'entourent et aux scènes qu'il devine à travers la cloison. Hugo a peur, et parfois une sorte de plaisir étrange accompagne sa peur. Dans un monde en pleine destruction, il prend conscience à la fois des massacres en train de se perpétrer et des mystères de la sexualité. Renouant avec le thème de l'enfant recueilli par une prostituée (présent dans Histoire d'une vie et Tsili), Aharon Appelfeld mêle l'onirisme et le réalisme dans ce roman doué d'une force hypnotique.
